Queen's Birthday Special (Part 1): Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (Official Video)

Dated 9th of June, 2018

Queen are one of those bands that has a very special place in my heart: this video was the one of many that got me into hard rock and/or heavy metal.

So, what inspired me to write these posts?

Friday night/Saturday morning last week, one of my friends on 2rrr (The Rock Man) hosted a program titled The Midnight Special: this particular episode was a 'Royal' special with half the show featuring Queen and the other half with songs referring to songs that have the words 'King' or 'Queen' in them.

About the same time last year, he did another special focusing exclusively on the band, and this included more of their 'classic' songs.  I personally liked that episode more, because there was more focus on the band itself and a more specialised knowledge of the band.

However, it didn't mean that the more recent episode was bad, what it simply meant was that I liked last year's Queen's Birthday special more.  There were some bands and songs I really liked including Deep Purple with 'Speed King' and Rainbow with 'Kill the King'.  Queen's song, 'Killer Queen' was an obvious choice, and one that I liked regardless of whether or not it gets played to death.

My suggestions for the Rock Man to really 'rock' this occasion include the following songs, both by Queen and other bands with 'Queen' or 'King' in the title.  Disclaimer: my choices would probably be a bit more 'out there' and less commercial.

My choices for Queen would include:

Other song choices (with the words 'King' and 'Queen' in the titles):

  • Sex Pistols w/- God Save the Queen (both their own version, originally from Never Mind the Bollocks' and the 'symphonic' version, with Malcolm McLaren talking over it - from The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle);
  • Gwar (French Punk band) w/- King Queen (from Scum Dogs of the Universe).
  • Manowar w/- Kings of Metal (the title track from 'Kings of Metal')
  • Kiss - Kings of the Night Time World (from Destroyer)
  • Rose Tattoo - Rock'n'Roll is King (from Assault and Battery)
  • Boss - Dancing Queen (from Step On It)
  • Abba - Dancing Queen (from Arrival)
  • Lee Aaron - Metal Queen (from Metal Queen)

Anyway, if I think of more songs, I will add them here.

Here is the Rock Man's play list for the 9th of June, 2018 last night.  As it turns out, Rose Tattoo were included (my mistake for not knowing that).  As I say, the real 'stand out' songs were the more 'rockier' or heavier songs.

Nevertheless, I respect the Rock Man (as he has been one of my longest-standing friends that has worked on the station, and would like to say the following:
Keep up the good work!!!
cheers,
Colleen
