Integrating type into design

Learning Activity 4: How did they do it?

Below is a magazine spread; this is also an example elements can be added into the design in order to integrate the type into the design and achieve unity. For instance, colours of headings and call-out text have been changed to the same colour red featured in the background image. List nine more ways of what else has been done to the design in order to integrate the type.

Answer

Apart from coloured headings and call-out text being the same colour as the graphics, we also see the following elements used to achieve unity:
1.      Text hierarchy: with larger and bolder text near the tops of pages, sections and paragraphs.
2.      An introductory paragraph in bold.
3.      Use of lines and margins to make some sections, like, headings, quotes and call-out text stand out.
4.      White space to separate the paragraphs.
5.      The main heading and subheading in capitals.
6.      Flush-left, ragged-right text for paragraphs.
7.      Title page for main heading (with a picture as a background).
8.    Unusual centring for main heading/title – with one word (‘zone’) being to the left, and the other word (‘sixty’) to the right.
9.      General layout is asymmetrical; some words are overlapping in heading.
